Legal wife of Motoharu Kikkawa, and daughter of Nobunao Kumagai. Born with a fiercely competitive personality, she soon found herself at odds with Takaie Shishido's wife, Lady Goryū, for which she was admonished by Motonari Mōri. Her letters to Motonari were short, and often invoked wry smiles upon his face. Motoharu loved his wife deeply, and never took any concubines. At home, she was a good wife and a wise mother. Some anecdotes say she was very plain-looking, but their veracity remains highly doubtful.

In 1547, she married Motoharu Kikkawa, a child of Motonari Mōri. The following year, she gave birth to their eldest child, Motonaga, then Motouji and Hiroie came afterward. Even though it was originally a political marriage, Motoharu deeply loved Lady Shinjō, and he took no other wives.
Being a determined woman, she harbored ambivalence with Lady Goryū, Motonari's daughter, and it troubled Motonari. Also, Lady Shinjō was known to send short letters to Motonari that brought out wry smiles from him, and she did not reply to Kobayakawa Takakage's letters mediating reconciliation with Lady Goryū. Despite this, she was a good wife and a wise mother in the Kikkawa family. 若い頃からうつけであった広家に夫の元春と連名の書状を送り更生を促すなど、吉川家を盛り上げるべく努力した。
In 1586 and 1587, Motoharu (on his way to Kyūshū) and Motonaga died sequentially, leaving Hiroie as the head of the Kikkawa clan. After the battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Lady Shinjō migrated to Iwakuni in accordance with Hiroie.
She died in 1606.
